I’ve just hit on your page whilst researching nipples. I’m from Wales, aged 38, had bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction using lat dorsal muscle last September. I’ve got fantastic prosthetic nipples, taken from a cast of one of mine before the bir op last year. I’m currently looking at nipple reconsruction and found your blog. What are your thoughts then so far on techniques and outcomes?

From what my surgeon said, I think outcome depends greatly on tissue health. If your circulation is compromised, there is a higher probability of complications. I ALSO think that your outcome depends on the TYPE of flap reconstruction and the experience of your surgeon. I DID read an interesting excerpt from a medical journal about cartilage harvesting. Small bits of live cartilage are harvested and used as the core for the new nipples to guarantee that they will stand up. But then you have the added possibility of something going wrong with the cartilage. As far as techniques go, I’ve read that the Star Flap has the highest success rate.
I think you’ll want to talk to your surgeon and ask him/her. If they don’t give you a good answer, get a second opinion. Regular surgeons are okay for most things but you really do need a BOARD CERTIFIED cosmetic surgeon that specializes in breast reconstruction. Definitely interview and ask questions. Always remember that if you don’t like the answers you get, there’s always another surgeon.

2 years ago I had IDC (cancer in the ducts) and had 1200grams of tissue removed from each breast, give or take…..and I also went through nipple necrosis. It was so horrifying, I refused reconstructive surgery (I just wanted the hole in my chest to be closed), but I took a lot of pictures, because at the time I couldn’t find ANYthing on it on the net. I have passively wondered where I would post these pictures for the most benefit to others. Sure wish I would have found your site back then…I felt very alone at the time. If your interested in these pictures…Id rather they not be posted under my name, let me know.

I found your blog because I was looking for info about breast reduction scars since I am about two weeks post op. I’m doing great, I just was curious to see other scars. Thank you for posting this deeply personal ordeal. You are a rockstar with a cute set of girls now! Write that book baby! Thank you!!!!!

hi,
I had a mastectomy and during surgery had an implant inserted. It started immediatly going purple/black and became very swollen. After 5 days I was taken back to theatre and the implant was taken out, it was so bad that the skin wouldn’t close and I needed a skin graft. I was told that the implant they put in was probably too big. ( I had a mastectomy the prevoious year on the other breast but had an expander put in to stretch the skin, after 6 months I got silicone implants inserted into both breast. When I found the lump on the other breast and had to have another mastectomy the surgeon said he would try and avoid putting in an expander as the skin should have already stretched from the silicone implant 3 months ago, so it should just be a case of doing the mastectomy and replacing the implant with the same sized one.) Now I’m totally flat chested with a horrible skin graft as I only had surgery 2 weeks ago I just don’t know where to turn.

Hi Maria,
I have just finished my nightmare with necrosis-well at least I think I am mostly through. My original surgery was in November 2011. One week later I had a black nipple on my left breast and a black open wound the size of a dollar bill on my right breast. Like the others on this blog, my ps insisted that I smoked, which I do not. After debriedment in the office 3 times weekly for a month, he informed me I would have the go back to surgery for the debriedment. That was in early december and I am finally healed. I will be going back to surgery next week for nipple reconstruction and implants. Yes I went from a 38dd, to a 36 b-c to now not even an a cup. And worse, they are deformed, he had to remove all the tissue underneath the nipple on both breast. It looks as though I have had mastectomy.
My fingers are double-crossed that the next surgery will not have any complicatons.

Hi I just had a breast reduction 2 weeks ago. I have dead skin size of golf ball under my left breast. He put me on silver cream they use for burn victims and antibiotics. I had to get some of the dead tissue cut off and will have to do that again next week. It actually hurts and stings right now. I am hoping that is a good sign. I feel so alone and have no answers. I thank you for this page. My question is does it heal? I do not want surgery again.
